HuskersAlexandersjs.jpg (16230 bytes)Nebraska Mutilates San Jose St. in opener.
Dan Alexander breaks away from a San Jose St. tackler.

The X-man (Dan Alexander) led all rushers with 226 yards for the day.The Huskers had 505
yards rushing as a team including 117 by Correl Buckhalter. For the math impaired that's
5 times from one goal line to the other.(Note:That is not equal to a country mile). The
Husker offense had 596 total yards for the day in the opener.Eric Crouch didn't depreciate his
Heisman hopes, scoring 3 leg induced td's and throwing for another. The Huskers will be
tested on a much larger scale this week taking on a fired up bickering Irish team on their
home field.Personally I don't think fired up will be enough to match up with the number
one Huskers of Nebraska. The Huskers should have no problem scoring points on the
quarrelling Irish, but how solid is the Husker defense? This game will be a more realistic
barometer of the Blackshirts rebuilt defense and give us an indication of how far they
will need to improve if they hope to go to the Orange Bowl.A real concern of mine will be
special teams. After looking over the punt and kick return teams ,they appear vulnerable.
The Husker starters gave up some big gains against the huge hearted ,no chance in hell
of winning San Jose St. offense Saturday.Including 113 yards rushing in the first quarter.
Lets hope it was an adjustment period and not a glimpse of things to come. The last meeting
of Notre Dame and Nebraska was the 1973 Orange Bowl.Johnny Rodgers had 4 touchdowns
in a 40-6 slaughter of the tussling Leprechaun lovers by the mighty Huskers of Nebraska.
Next Game:Sharkfeet expects a relatively low scoring game. The Husker special teams may be
the difference in this one as field position may be the key to victory.

By The Associated Press
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) -- Eric Crouch ran 7 yards for a touchdown in overtime
as No. 1 Nebraska beat Notre Dame 27-24 on Saturday.
The No. 23 Irish, who rallied from a two-touchdown deficit with long kickoff and punt
returns for scores, took their first lead at 24-21 when Nick Setta kicked a 29-yard field
goal on the opening OT possession. Jeremy Slechta sacked Arnaz Battle for a 6-yard
loss on third-and-goal from the 4 before the kick.
On the second OT possession, the Cornhuskers (2-0) faced a third-and-9 from the
24. But Crouch hit Tracey Wistrom with a 9-yard pass to keep the drive alive. Dan
Alexander burst up the middle for 8 yards, and Crouch scored on the next play.
"It was something that I'll never forget, especially at a place like Notre Dame,'' Crouch
said. "It's real hard for any team rated No. 1 to come in here and beat these guys.''
Nebraska players ran onto the field to celebrate in front of a sellout crowd of 80,232 at
Notre Dame Stadium, many of whom traveled from Nebraska to root on the Huskers.
"I'm not big on that moral victory stuff. We're Notre Dame,'' Irish linebacker Rocky Boiman
said. "We poured put our hearts and souls into this game, and my guts are torn up inside.''
Crouch had three TD's on runs of 62, 1 and 7 yards, and finished with 16 carries for 80
yards. He passed for 103 yards with one interception. Alexander carried 24 times for 112
yards and a TD.
For Notre Dame (1-1), Battle carried 14 times for 107 yards and completed just 3 of 15
passes for 40 yards.
