TOM OSBORNE

 Tom Osborne was born Feb. 23, 1937 in Hastings Nebraska where he was a star quarterback and basketball player at Hastings (Neb.) College, Osborne received his bachelor's degree in 1959.He was the first to earn Nebraska athlete of the year honors twice.He then played two seasons in the NFL after being drafted as a flanker with the Washington Redskins and one with the San Francisco 49ers.In 1962, he became a graduate assistant on the staff of Nebraska football coach Bob Devaney. Osborne received his master's degree in 1963 and his doctorate in educational psychology in 1965.In 1967,he became NU's full-time receivers coach. He was elevated to assistant head coach in Devaney's last season,1972,and became head coach at Devany's request in 1973. He and his wife Nancy have a son and two daughters.

   In his quarter-century as head coach, Tom Osborne never won fewer than nine games in a season and played in a Bowl game every year. His 255-49-3 record gave him the best winning percentage (83.6%) among active Division 1-A coaches before his retirement and the fifth-best of all time. During his last five seasons,the Huskers went an amazing 60-3 and won three national championships in 94,95,97.They produced one and possibly two of the greatest college teams ever assembled. He leaves Nebraska as a living legend in the world of college football, and a hell of a lot more to the people of Nebraska where his name will never be forgotten,and his accomplishments never surpassed. Awards Tom Osborne was among the winners during the College Football Awards at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex Dec, 10,1999 where he received the Home Depot Coach of the Decade Award. "I guess when you quit coaching, you get a lot smarter," Osborne said. Osborne was honored for his 79-11-1 record and three national championships during the 1990s. The Cornhuskers won six conference titles during the decade. The team's 60-3 mark in his last five seasons is the best five year run in college football history. Osborne said he could not have done it without the excellent support of his wife, Nancy, and the great coaching staff at Nebraska. "The most important thing that comes out of any program is what players do after," Osborne said.

 His other honors during his career at Nebraska were Big 8 Coach of Year (1975, 76, 80, 88, 92, 93, 94),Big 12 Coach of Year (1996) , AFCA Dist.VI Coach of Year (1978, 79, 80, 83, 87, 88, 94), AP All-Time Big 8 coach among other various awards and honors.
