Florida State 17

Nebraska 34

Lincoln,NE. Memorial Stadium

Lincoln, Nebraska (September 6,1986) -Nebraska had already experienced a Florida State upset the year before and they were in no mood for it to happen again in the 1986 season opener. The way things started off, though, the Huskers may have thought it was deja-vu, again.
In the first ever night game at Memorial Stadium, the Seminoles took a first quarter lead when quarterback Chip Ferguson connected with Victor Floyd on a 30 yard touchdown pass. The Huskers tied things up at 7 early in the second period when Steve Taylor took the ball 20 yards for a touchdown run, then took the lead in the last minute of the half on a 33 yard Dale Klein field goal. The Husker lead didn't last long, though. On the next drive, Sammie Smith took off 57 yards for a touchdown with just 33 seconds left in the half giving FSU a 17-10 at the break.
Florida State lengthened their lead in the third period on a 46 yard field goal, then it was time for the Husker offense to get in gear and the defense to shut things down.
Taylor guided the next Husker scoring drive and capped the effort himself on a 6 yard touchdown run. The Huskers added another third quarter score on a 12 yard touchdown pass from Taylor to Todd Milikan, giving the Huskers a 24-17 lead.
The Huskers scored twice in the fourth quarter to lock things up. Von Sheppard grabbed a 46 yard TD pass from Taylor and Klein added a 38 yard field goal to account for the 34-17 final score.
The Black Shirts buckled down and held the Seminoles to minus- two yards in offense in the second half.
